Richard Sutton was born in Liverpool on 28th March 1886, the son of Richard and Alice Jane Sutton (née Locke) who were married on the 12th November 1882 at St Mary’s Church, Kirkdale. They were both born in Liverpool and had nine children, three of whom sadly died young. Richard had an older sister Alice Helena, and younger siblings John Alfred, Charles (died at age 1), Frances (died in infancy), Maud, Albert Ernest, Ada (died in infancy), and Elizabeth.  

In 1891 the family is living at 37 Barlow Street, Kirkdale, with four children. His father is aged 30, a dock labourer, his mother, Alice, is aged 25, with childred Alice aged 6, Richard aged 5, John aged 2, and Charles aged 7 months, he sadly died soon after. 

Richard attended St. Chad’s and Westminster Road Council School, the family’s address in 1893 is 220 Westminster Road.

The 1901 Census finds them at 67 Barry Street, Kirkdale with six children. His father, is aged 40, a general labourer, his mother, Alice, is aged 35, with children Alice H. aged 17, and a shop assistant, Richard aged 15 is a railway porter, John aged 12, Albert aged 6, Maud aged 4, and Elizabeth aged 3 months.  

At the time of the 1911 census Richard and four siblings are living at home with their parents at 27 Priam Street, Kirkdale. His father, is aged 50, and Richard, 25, are both porters/dock labourers, his mother is 46. Thye advised that they had been married for 27 years, and have had 9 children, 6 of whom have survived. There are four children declared in the household; John, aged 22, is a railway carter, Albert, aged 16, is a railway guard/caller, Maud, aged 14, does dressmaking, and Elizabeth is 10, at school. 

 

Richard enlisted in Liverpool and was serving in the 20th Battalion, The King’s Liverpool Regiment as Corporal No 23838 when he died on the 18th October 1918, aged 32.

Richard died of pneumonia in an Auxiliary Hospital in Liverpool on 18th October 1918.

Corporal Richard Sutton was laid to rest in Kirkdale Cemetery, Liverpool, on 25th October, his age on the burial record given as 32 (CWGC gives his age as 33). 

He now rests at Kirkdale Cemetery, Liverpool where the inscription on his headstone reads:

“SWEET ARE THE MEMORIES LEFT BEHIND TO THOSE WHO KNEW THEIR WORTH”

There are 519 First and Second World War burials in the Cemetery. 

Although his regimental number suggests that he enlisted in about November 1914, a 1914-1915 Star medal roll has not been found for Richard. He served overseas and earned the British War Medal and Victory Medal. 

It is not known when Richard returned to England though he was posted to the 3rd (Garrison) Bn K.L.R. whilst home.

His mother, Alice, received his Army effectsArmy Pay of £1 4s 7d and a War Gratuity of £23-10. The pension card does state any amount given. 

On the 1921 Census at Priam Street, his parents are living with their married daughter Elizabeth Burns, aged 20.  

His father died in 1940, aged 80, and his mother in 1943, aged 78.  His parents were buried with their son.

Richard is commemorated on the following memorials -

Westminster Road Council School (now in St. Lawrence C of E School)

St. Mary with St. Athanasius Parishioners.
