Henry Howard was born 1877 at Banks, Southport,  the son of Hugh Howard and his wife Jane (nee Wignall). His parents married at St Cuthberts Church, North Meols in 1862.

The 1891 census finds Henry aged 14, a basket makers apprentice living at 95 Little Lane, Banks with his parents and six siblings. His father, Hugh is a 49 year old farmer, whilst his mother Jane is 49. His siblings are listed as: Ellen 22, Thomas 20 farm labourer, Hugh 16 farm labourer, John 12, Robert 8 scholar, Jane 6 scholar.

The 1901 census finds Henry aged 24, a basket maker, boarding with the Dolphin family at 97 Whalley Range, Blackburn.

He was the husband of Isabel Howard (nee Linaker) of 29 Inkerman Street, Blackburn, Lancashire.  They had married in 1902 at Ormskirk and had two children Jane Ellen and Beatrice.

The 1911 Census shows the family living at 29 Inkerman Street, Blackburn. Henry aged 34, born 1877 is a ship maker and his wife Isabel is aged 35, born 1876 is a dressmaker born in Banks Southport. They have been married for eight years and have two children, Jane Ellen born 09^th July 1903 and Beatrice born 23^rd July 1907 both being born in Blackburn.

His mother died in 1913.

Henry enlisted in Blackburn and was serving in the 19th Battalion, The King’s Liverpool Regiment as Private No 269183 when he was killed in action on the 03^rd December 1917 aged 40.

His body was not recovered or was subsequently lost as he has no known grave and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.

Those United Kingdom and New Zealand servicemen who died after August 16th 1917 are named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, a site which marks the furthest point reached by Commonwealth forces in Belgium until nearly the end of the war.

The Tyne Cot Memorial now bears the names of almost 35,000 officers and men whose graves are not known. The memorial, designed by Sir Herbert Baker with sculpture by Joseph Armitage and F.V. Blundstone, was unveiled by Sir Gilbert Dyett on 20 June 1927.

The memorial forms the north-eastern boundary of Tyne Cot Cemetery, which was established around a captured German blockhouse or pill-box used as an advanced dressing station.

His father died  in 1928.
